November Exhibition - Hebden Bridge Picture House Centenary
Tuesday 25th October - 22nd November 2021
Celebrating one hundred years of movie-going magic!
This exhibition of photographs and memories has been compiled by the Friends of The Picture House with the support of Hebden Bridge Local History Society, as part of their year-long centenary programme.
The Picture House was opened in 1921 and remains a thriving, independent, not-for-profit cinema. Run by Hebden Royd Town Council and staffed by members of the local community, the cinema shows a variety of new, classic and cult films, from mainstream to art-house, documentary to foreign language, with regular screenings of specialist films and touring programmes from a range of organisations, including the British Film Institute.
There is an evening screening daily, family matinees at weekends, weekend teatime screenings, and an elevenses screening every Thursday morning (with free tea or coffee). The Picture House also participates in festivals such as the Hebden Bridge Film Festival, the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival, and Happy Valley Pride.
This exhibition celebrates both the stunning art deco building and its importance to the local community. The Picture House has overcome several challenges in recent years, including two major floods which destroyed the ground floor and the enforced closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The photographs and posters will reflect these challenges, as well as the special occasions, community involvement, movie memories and gala nights which have been a feature of the Picture House story.
The opening of the exhibition also coincides with the Picture House’s week-long screening of James Bond’s long-awaited return to the cinema screens in No Time to Die. Tickets are available to book online, and if you are interested in the cinema’s history, pick up a copy of the specially produced commemorative centenary programme from the box office.
